County Business Patterns and Demographics Mapping

County Business Patterns provides annual statistics for businesses with paid employees within the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Statistics are available on businesses at the National, State, and County levels. Data are presented for number of businesses, employment, and annual payroll. Data do not include statistics on self-employed businesses, employees of private households, or most government activities.

County Business Patterns data are processed through various automated and analytical edits to remove anomalies, validate geographic coding, addresses, and industry classification. The "Noise Infusion Method" is applied to protect individual business establishments from disclosure. For more detailed information on County Business Patterns including data for our region, how the data are collected, the coverage and methodology, and industry detail please visit the County Business Patterns website.

In an effort to make the mapping of these business patterns more relevant,  the Census Bureau has integrated demographic data with the business pattern maps. The maps provide an interactive, easy-to-understand overview of how many types of businesses are in your community or anywhere else in the U.S, as well as providing you with some basic sense of the people that live there. The maps include 2011 County Business Patterns statistics combined with demographic statistics from the 2010 Census.

To play around with the map I would suggest you visit their mapping website and put in "New York State" in the geography search box once you launch the program. This will bring up a map similar to one below where you can then search the tabs above it for information on the demographics of each county.
