With the American Communities Survey (ACS) in full swing these days (all three iterations - the One Year, Three Year, and Five Year estimates - all now have multiple sets of data available) it strikes me that people may want to look at them over time. However there are at least two things that everyone should be wary of when looking at the data sets across ACS years.
Please remember that you should:
- only compare like versions to like versions (one year estimates to one year estimates)
- only compare discrete sets to one another (sets that do not have over lapping years, such as the 2009-2005 FIVE year estimate to the FIVE year estimate covering 2014-2010 since none of the years between the two overlap).
Below you can find all of the Five Year, Three Year, and One Year Estimates Profiles for available for the counties in our region. The Five and Three Year Estimates cover Herkimer and Oneida Counties; the single year estimates only cover Oneida County.
PLEASE NOTE HOWEVER THAT THE 3 YEAR ESTIMATES ARE NO LONGER BEING PRODUCED.
So which data set are you looking for ? The general rule of thumb is that if you want
the most RECENT data, then use the One Year Estimates. In the event that those aren't published as in the case for Herkimer County, then you have no choice but to use the FIVE Year Estimates. The FIVE year estimates do provide you with t
he most ACCURATE data and should be used if this is the goal of your research even when one year estimates are available.
This page should serve as a sort of historical matrix for our region when it comes to the ACS and will be updated regularly. I will also add it as a permanent link on the front page just below the banner so people can always look at the profiles within some historical context as well.
