Below, you can access both the 2014 Single Year Estimate Profiles and the 2014 Five Year Estimate Profiles foe the Utica-Rome MSA (Herkimer and Oneida Counties combined). Both the single year and the five year estimates are offered here. The logic of which to use depends on what your purpose is. According to the Census Bureau, one would use the single year estimates if you were looking for the most recent data on the region. But if accuracy were more important, then you should use the five year estimates.

New "Census Reporter" Offers Easy Access To Most Recent ACS Data

There's a new tool available, particularly intended for journalists, that helps pull together census related data from the most recent American Communities Survey (ACS). Sponsored by the Knight Foundation, the new tool, called Census Reporter was developed to make it easier for journalists to write stories using information from the U.S. Census Bureau. Place profiles and comparison pages provide a friendly interface for navigating data, including visualizations for a more useful first look.

Using Census Reporter is fairly easy.  When you go to the website you really have three options: you can search for profile information by the name of a particular location; you can search for specific tables from the ACS for a particular location; or you can browse tables topically and select which one you'd like to see by location. Each of these options has various benefits, and all have the ability to download the data afterwards. For example, when you look at the profiles, you can pull up the local data and see how it compares to the state and federal statistics. In addition, the profiles option allows you to look specifically at data for your current location by clicking a button and giving your computer permission to share where you are!

The site is not without its limitations however. I have yet to find a way to look at multiple locations at the same time, which means comparing across similar areas isn't possible yet, and I haven't found a way to change the database I am using for generating the statistics. It defaults to the most recently released data available over the smallest number of years - meaning IF you wanted to use the 5 year estimates from the ACS for a county that has a one year estimate out there, you're out of luck! It ONLY gives you the 1 year estimate stats. That's ok, but sometimes you might want the 5 year estimates.

Regardless, the Census Reporter is a very slick tool and might be helpful for a quick look at recent ACS data.

For many of our communities, this represents the only source of data for things such as education, poverty, and transportation issues. As part of an effort to bring this data to the public's eye, I like to occasionally post the profiles for some of our smaller towns and villages.

2012 One Year ACS Estimates Released

Each year, the Census Bureau releases three versions of the American Communities Survey (ACS). These are the One Year, the Three Year, and the Five Year ACS Estimates. These are released based on the population size of the municipality.   

• Five year estimates are released for EVERY level of census geography (down to the block group level) as well as every municipal  civil division (think town, city, and village).  
• Three year estimates are only released for geographies or municipalities with a MINIMUM population of 20,000 persons. So many smaller villages and towns are excluded.  
• One year estimates are released for municipalities with a MINIMUM population of 65,000. This means they are mostly available for counties and larger cities.

What this means for municipalities is that in some cases (Oneida County for example), each year there are 3 levels of ACS released - the One Year, the Three Year, and the Five Year ACS Estimates ALL include Oneida County data. Other communities, like Herkimer County, only have two versions of the ACS that cover them - the Three Year, and the Five Year ACS Estimates. And even still smaller areas, say the tiny villages such as Newport, can only find annual updates of data in the Five Year estimates.

The most recent One Year Estimates for 2012 were released today, so new information is now available for Oneida County (and larger geographies like New York State). A permanent link, located just above the banner of this blog will take you to the most recent ACS data for each county, including this new release of One Year ACS data for Oneida County.

Sub-County Profiles Now Available From Cornell PAD

Previously I have posted about Cornell's Program on Applied Demographics (PAD) County Profiles. These profiles provide a rather in-depth look at each county in New York, covering wide ranging topics from age and sex of the population, to the languages spoken at home, poverty levels, education, agricultural characteristics, and local climate.  Each county profile contains data, as well as thematic maps to help in understanding some of the nuances of the information.

PAD has now released similar profiles on the sub-county level - meaning similar types of data and written profiles are now out there on the town and city levels across the state. All you have to do is go to the PAD Profile page and select the Sub-County tab as shown below. Then simply click on a county to get the sub-county profiles.

Circular Area Profiles: Getting Data Within A Set Distance From An Address

The very talent people at the Missouri Census Data Center (MCDC) are presently offering a GREAT tool for assembling data for an area in concentric circles around a specific location. In other words, say you want to locate a business at a specific corner in the City of Utica. You can use this tool to give you demographic, economic, social and housing profiles within a given radius (say within 5 miles) of that corner. Previously Census 2000 tools have been able to provide  this, but this is the first one I have seen that works now with both the 2010 Census as well as the most recent five year American Communities Survey data from 2011.

The "circular area profiles," as the MCDC is calling them, requires a user to input the latitude and longitude of the location being targeted, along with a few other minor things like giving the circular area a name, etc., in order to generate the profiles. So say we wanted to know about an area within 5 miles of the SUNYIT Campus in Marcy. The website provides a Google map application which allows you to type in the address of the location you are interested in and gives you the coordinates for that point. The lat-long coordinates for SUNYIT are 43.135118 and -75.229109, for example. If you type these coordinates into the appropriate boxes and then select a ring of 5 miles, you can then generate all sorts of information about the local population. The tool also allows you to pick multiple distances from the same point, so you could ask for data at a 5 mile, 15 mile, and 25 mile circle, all at the same time. Here is just a tip-of-the-iceberg sample:

The program is a beta level test project at the moment so it may still have a few kinks. But the good people at the MCDC deserve a heap of credit and a bushel of thanks for their fine work on this project !

ACS Community Profile: Introducing the Westmoreland CDP

According to Wikipedia, the Town of Westmoreland was formed in 1792 from the neighboring Town of Whitestown. In 1802, part of Westmoreland was used to establish the Towns of Vernon and Verona. More of Westmoreland was lost in 1855 during the formation of the Town of Kirkland, located to the south of Westmoreland. Since that time the town boundaries have remained relatively stable. While Wikipedia recongnizes some 8 differnt hamlets in the town, only one has current standing with the US Census Bureau, and that would be Westmoreland, the census designated place, or CDP.

The Westmoreland CDP is located around the intersection of Route 233 and Main Street, just south of the local entrance to the NYS Thruway. This newly created CDP represents some three hundred residents, living in about 120 residences. CDPs are meant to represent small unincorporated areas that have some population and are largely recognizable by some commonly shared local name. Often hamlets (which are not incorporated) such as Old Forge in the Town of Webb come to mind when we think of CDPs, but there are potentially hundreds in our region. The hamlet of Westmoreland was one of several that were promoted, as it were, to have CDP status during the last census in 2010. What is the advantage of being a CDP? Well, the only true advantage is that census related data, especially data from the decennial census and the American Communities Survey (ACS), are provided for CDP geographies. Becoming a census designated place gives communities a platform for shouting "I'm a somebody!", at least in terms of now getting locally relevant data from the Census Bureau. Such data can be used potentially to "grow" and promote the community by local agencies and policy makers.

LAST CALL: Census of Agriculture Ends May 31st

With the window to respond to the 2012 Census of Agriculture officially closing on May 31, 2013 the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is urging farmers and ranchers not to miss this opportunity to be counted and help determine the future of farming in America. USDA has already received more than 2 million completed Census forms.If you have not sent in your Census form and are a farmer with an active farm, visit the Census of Agriculture website . For those that have received their forms in the mail you can do your Census of Agriculture form online.

The Census of Agriculture is the leading source of facts and figures about American agriculture. Conducted every five years, the Census provides a detailed picture of U.S. farms and ranches and the people who operate them. It is the only source of uniform, comprehensive agricultural data for every state and county in the United States.

The 2012 Census of Agriculture collects information concerning all areas of farming and ranching operations, including production expenses, market value of products, and operator characteristics. This information is used by everyone who provides services to farmers and rural communities - including federal, state and local governments, agribusinesses, and many others. Census of Agriculture data is used to make decisions about many things that directly impact farmers, including:

• community planning
• store/company locations
• availability of operational loans and other funding
• location and staffing of service centers
• farm programs and policies

In the meantime, as we wait for these to be tallied and the data released, here are the county profiles from the last Census of Agriculture for Herkimer and Oneida Counties. Each is two pages long, so be sure to look at both pages of the profiles below.

Utica, Rome and the Town of New Hartford 2011 Profiles

With the advent of the American Community Survey (ACS), profile data is available for each and every community in the region, regardless of their size. As covered in early posts on this blog, the Census Bureau releases three versions of the American Communities Survey (ACS). These are the One Year, the Three Year, and the Five Year ACS Estimates. These are released every year and are based on the population size of the municipality. Five year estimates are released for EVERY level of census geography (down to the block group level) as well as every municipal  civil division (think town, city, and village). Three year estimates are only released for geographies or municipalities with a MINIMUM population of 20,000 persons. So many smaller villages and towns are excluded. One year estimates are released for municipalities with a MINIMUM population of 65,000. This means they are mostly available for counties and larger cities.

As noted above, three year estimates represent the most recent data available for municipalities of more than 20,000 people. In our region, this only covers three municipalities (other than Herkimer and Oneida Counties in their entirety). These municipalities are the cities of Utica and Rome, and the Town of New Hartford. CDPs: Old Forge Data Available for the First Time

CDPs - or Census Designated Places -  are closely settled, named, unincorporated communities that generally contain a mixture of residential, commercial, and retail areas similar to those found in incorporated places of similar sizes. A full description of this definition can be found in an earlier post on this blog.
