Occupational Attractions: Who Marries Whom By Occupation

When it comes to falling in love, it’s not just fate that brings people together—sometimes it’s their jobs. Bloomberg.com scanned data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2014 American Community Survey—which covers 3.5 million households—to find out how people are pairing up by occupation.

A Regional Look at Recent Love and Marriage: Births and Marriages in the Past 12 Months

The infographic below is based on the 2012 Five Year Estimates of the American Communities Survey. Geographically it is based on the two primary PUMAs covering most of our two county region. It provides some insight into recent marriages and births over the past twelve months prior to the survey response.

Census Struggles to Gather Data on Same Sex Marriages

Same-sex marriage is now legal in Washington, D.C., and 17 states. Now the federal government’s task is to produce an accurate count of same-sex married couples. Acknowledging a “very serious problem” of flawed same-sex marriage data, the U.S. Census Bureau is testing new marriage and relationship questions on its pre-Census 2020 surveys in hopes of producing more accurate numbers in the next few years.

The PEW Research Center has a very good article exploring the hurdles facing the Census Bureau in this task.

The bureau also is testing an expanded question about marital status. Now, people can choose “now married,” “widowed,” “divorced,” “separated,” or “never married.” The agency is considering adding questions about whether someone is “living with a boyfriend/girlfriend or partner,” or is “currently in a registered domestic partnership or civil union.”

The Best Counties For Finding the "Marrying Kind"

Ok, one more Valentine's themed post here. According to the US Census Bureau the median age for first time marriage in the United States is approximately 27 years old for women, and 29 years of age for men.



Here, then, are the top 10 counties in New York for finding a single-never-married-mate in the 26 to 30 year old age range.

Just for comparison purposes, Herkimer County has the 11th highest ratio of females to males in the age range 26 to 30, while Oneida County has the 22nd highest ratio of males to females.
