Herkimer County Migration Based on IRS Returns

One of the key components for estimating migration impacts on population are IRS records. As people move and relocate, IRS records are used to track their entry into, or exit from, communities. The graph below shows the net gains and losses for Herkimer County based on these records.

One thing to note: the 2012 data was tabulated in a manner considerably different than that of previous years.

 In prior years the filer's ID was track and population migration was attributed based on previous household information. In 2012, as an effort to get more accurate data, not only is the filer's ID tracked, but also their dependents, thereby providing a more precise picture of how many people in a household may have relocated from one community to another.

New Zip Code Data from the IRS

The IRS recently released ZIP Code data showing selected income and tax items classified by State, ZIP Code, and size of adjusted gross income. These data are based on individual income tax returns filed with the IRS and are available for Tax Years 1998, 2001, 2004 through 2012.

 

The map on the IRS page allows you to select a set of state ZIP Codes and peruse their data. 

 

 

The data include items such as:

• Number of returns, which approximates the number of households
• Number of personal exemptions, which approximates the population
• Adjusted gross income 
• Wages and salaries
• Dividends before exclusion
• Interest received  

So pick a year below and take a look at your local ZIP code !

Single-County IRS Migration Profiles

State and county migration data for 2010–2011 are now available on Tax Stats. Migration data for the United States are based on year-to-year address changes reported on individual income tax returns filed with the IRS. The data present migration patterns by State or by county for the entire United States and are available for inflows (the number of new residents who moved to a county or State and where they migrated from) and outflows (the number of residents leaving a county or State and where they went).

The Missouri Census Data Center, under the leadership of John Blodgett, one of the true treasures of the national state data center program,  has downloaded and converted these files. Their web application for generating IRS Migration Profile reports has been upgraded to recognize the new year of data. Access this application at the IRS Migration Profile menu page (for single counties, anywhere in the U.S.). 

This application will generate a migration profile with data regarding movement into and out of the chosen county based on tracking movement reflected in IRS tax returns in consecutive tax years.  The report will by default show all counties that had a minimum of 10 tax returns indicating a move into the selected county or out of that county.

2011 IRS Returns By Herkimer and Oneida County Zip Codes

Previously I had posted countywide IRS data from the 2011 returns that were recently released. The data is also available by zip codes, Below are two tables with some of the basics from the IRS release. These tables over things like the number of returns, the type of returns and the number of dependents claimed.

A second post will follow with additional zip code level return data such as salary and wages, itemization, and refunds.

More IRS Tax Data: County Level Information on AGI, Size of Refunds, and Itemization of Deductions

An earlier post provided information about the number of tax returns filed in 2011 for both counties, as well some insight into joint returns, paid preparer returns and the number of dependents and exemptions. Here is some additional information that covers items such as adjusted gross income (AGI), the size of refunds, average amount of taxes owed, itemization, and the number of returns from farms.

2011 IRS Federal Tax Return Data Summaries for Herkimer and Oneida Counties

The Missouri State Census Data Center has recently released a tool for extracting IRS data from the 2011 IRS Returns. The returns data are aggregated summaries of U.S. federal tax returns (form 1040 et.al) for specific tax years and geographic areas. In this case, they are the 2011 returns and have been disaggregated into State, County and Zip Code geographies. Regional data has been downloaded for further analysis, but I wanted to offer the following sort of first cut look at some of the basics when it comes to those that filed taxes from either Herkimer or Oneida Counties.

Below is a table providing insight into the number of returns, whether they were filed jointly, were filed with a paid preparer, and the number of exemptions and dependents declared by filers. Each of these is broken out by 7 basic adjusted gross income (AGI) categories - those with no income, those between a $1 and $24,999, those from $25,000 to $49,999, those from $50,000 to $74,999, those from $75,000 to $99,999, those from $100,000 to $199,999, and those at $200,000 and above.
